Sak Yant is one of the oldest forms of sacred tattoo art in the world. The ancient roots of the sacred Thai tattoo

The history of Sak Yant stretches back to the Khmer civilization in Cambodia and the early Thai kingdoms of Sukhothai and Ayutthaya. As Buddhism spread across Southeast Asia, these traditions merged with Pali mantras and Vedic Yantra symbols to form what we know today as Sak Yant.

Sak Yant literally means: Sak = to tattoo, Yant = sacred Yantra symbol. Every line, every mark and every dot is imbued with ancient Buddhist power.

Monks and Ajarns: guardians of the tradition

In Thailand, Sak Yant are applied by Buddhist monks (Bhikkhu) in temples such as Wat Bang Phra in Nakhon Pathom, or by secular spiritual masters known as Ajarns. An Ajarn knows the sacred Pali mantras by heart and applies the tattoo with the Khem Sak needle, accompanied by prayers and breathing.

The power of Yantra symbols in the sacred Thai tattoo

The symbols in a Sak Yant are not random drawings. They are Yantra: geometric sacred figures derived from Pali, the liturgical language of Theravada Buddhism, containing encoded protective powers.

The spiritual rules of Sak Yant

Whoever wears a Sak Yant commits to the Katha - spiritual precepts: no stealing, no adultery, no lying, respecting others and no animal cruelty. Breaking these rules is believed to weaken or reverse the power of the Sak Yant.

About the master: Silas van Gemert

Silas van Gemert (°1977, Vlissingen) left the Netherlands at 17 for Australia. His journey led him to Thailand, where he lived and worked for 15 years. He learned the Thai language and submitted to the discipline of Buddhist monks.

He received the sacred blessing that gives him the right to place Sak Yant tattoos. His spiritual journey also took him to Brazil, Hawaii and Jerusalem.

Today, Silas is the leading Sak Yant master of Europe, working from his studio in the centre of Breda.
